Prezentacja „Breaking Apart” składa się z projekcji filmu wideo i czterech kanałów dźwiękowych z nagranymi tekstami. Film został nakręcony w Sydney, w Australii (Centre Point Tower) i Palm Beach (łodzie), a także w Watertown, Wisconsin, USA (rozbijanie młotem betonu). Teksty zostały wypowiedziane przez Caroline Senn (Daniel) i są wybrane losowo z jej osobistej poczty elektronicznej (e-mail). Teksty pochodzące z tej korespondencji zostały algorytmicznie zmanipulowane przez Caroline Senn (Daniel) i przedstawione w formie 4 spontanicznych i metaforycznych utworów.
Film został podzielony na dwie części. W dolnej połowie filmu, pojawia się budynek Centre Point Tower w Sydney. Widok wieży powtarza się dwukrotnie w ciągu 32 minut i 30 sekund. W górnej części filmu pojawiają się łodzie żaglowe i motorowe, powoli poruszając się po morzu, od lewej do prawej; samoloty poruszające się z prawej do lewej, oraz co jakiś czas, pojawia się sfilmowana scena rozbijania młotem pneumatycznym betony przez Dana Senna w jego domu z dzieciństwa w Watertown, Wisconsin, w którym obecnie mieszka i pracuje ze swoją żoną Caroline Senn (Daniel). Film wideo jest wyświetlane na półprzezroczystym papierze zawieszonym w przestrzeni galerii.
“Breaking Apart” consists of projected video and four channels of pre-recorded texts. The video was filmed in Sydney (airplanes, the Centre Point Tower) and Palm Beach (boats), Australia, and in Watertown, Wisconsin, USA (jack hammered 19 Century concrete). The texts were spoken by Caroline Senn (Daniel) and extracted from personal email exchanges which had been already widely, and blindly, disseminated worldwide. The texts were derived from this correspondence by Caroline Senn (Daniel), algorithmically manipulated, and presented on 4 tracks, two fixed and two randomly-continuously reorganized and dispersed within the installation space as a kind of distracting-externalized mind-chatter. Initially, all the elements were combined without intended meaning while recognizing the potential for spontaneous and metaphoric interpretation by individual patrons.
In the lower half of the video, the Centre Point Tower from the Sydney skyline is gradually covered by clouds over a 16 minute and 15 second period. Birds are seen moving with the motion of the clouds. The tower gesture is repeated twice over 32 minutes and 30 seconds framing the work. Above the tower frame are boats, sail and motorized, moving slowly from left to right; commercial airplanes moving right to left; and, concrete being jack hammered by Dan Senn at his his childhood home in Watertown, Wisconsin, where he and Caroline Senn (Daniel) now live and work. The video is projected on translucent paper.
In the concert version "Breaking Point" (see video), street noise is heard which was recorded while taping the Center Point Tower from a 15th floor high-rise apartment on Bourke Street in Sydney, the same position from which the airplanes were filmed.
Dan Senn (b. 1951 in Watertown, Wisconsin, USA); is an intermedia artist in the Fluxus tradition. His work includes music composition, kinetic sound sculpture, and experimental and documentary film.
